From a straight four motorcycle engine (allowing high revs) the cylinder head, the cylinder block, the piston pins and the piston rings are taken without any modification.

Four pistons and four connecting rods are made.
A crankshaft having its crankpins arranged at 0, 90, 270 and 180 degrees (as the typical V8 engines) is made.
Two pairs of counterweights are secured to the camshafts (they are adequate to make the balancing as perfect as the best V8).
A casing to hold the cylinder block and the crankshaft is made, as well as some one way valves and piping.

The crankshaft to camshafts transmission ratio is changed to 1:1.
The pistons pose near Top Dead Center for about 40% more time compared to the conventional (i.e. until combustion completes), thereby providing efficient burn of Diesel fuel at 5.600 rpm (=4.000*1.4) and increasing proportionally the power output.
A VVA on exhaust valves makes THE difference, trapping a controllable portion of the exhaust gas into the cylinder to provide ALIVE radicals (as there is no time to be deactivated) to the new charge to be burned more quickly, more completely and more efficiently (HCCI).

The two cycle Diesel (or natural gas or ethyl alcohol or gasoline) engine which results this way is:

  • perfectly balanced (as the V8),
  • even firing,
  • smooth (four power strokes per crank revolution, like the V8),
and has:
  • higher specific output (2*1.4=2.8 times, 2 because it is two cycle and 1.4 because it can burn at 1.4 times higher revs than normal Diesel),
  • built-in scavenging compressor (pump) which can be of any bore compared to the piston bore,
  • more effective handling of the HCCI technology,
  • conventional lubrication (just like the 4 stroke engines),
  • compact and smooth combustion chamber (no need for valve pockets on the piston crown),
  • cool piston skirt (improves mechanical efficiency).

Besides its two cycle operation this engine has no ports, therefore no oil leakage to the combustion chamber. It has a built-in compressor for the scavenging and real control of intake and exhaust processes. I.e. all known problems of the conventional two stroke have been solved.

In case of gasoline engine (where the time shortness during combustion may not be crucial) the two-cycle four cylinder engine can turn into a :

  • compact and light,
  • four stroke cycle,
  • FLAT,
  • eight cylinder engine (it needs only a second cylinder head),
  • even firing,
  • perfectly balanced (with a first order counter-rotating balancing shaft),
  • taking only four pistons and four connecting rods.

This FLAT engine has fewer parts, is simpler, is cheaper and significantly shorter than the conventional V8 of same bore and stroke
